The Schlachters research station for pomiculture, in the municipality of Sigmarszell near Lake Constance, is another site belonging to Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences, alongside the Weihenstephan campus, Triesdorf campus and the site at Straubing. Throughout its over-100-year history, the former Schlachters pomiculture school has provided training and further education in the areas of pomiculture, viniculture, and horticulture. Today the research station, located in the Lindau district, is organisationally assigned to the Institute of Horticulture and conducts practical pome fruit research on a site of around eight hectares.
For the approximately 200 family businesses in the 800-hectare Bavarian fruit-growing region near Lake Constance, the research station is a meeting point for information and further education. The research station’s advisory board provides support and advice for researchers at this location. This comprises representatives of the profession, official councils, the district of Lindau, the Bavarian Institute for Agriculture (Bayerische Landesanstalt für Landwirtschaft) in Freising, the Bavarian Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture (Bayerische Landesanstalt für Weinbau und Gartenbau) in Veitshöchheim, and the Lake Constance Pomiculture Centre of Excellence (Kompetenzzentrum Obstbau Bodensee) in Bavendorf. The Bavarian State Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry supports the research by means of material resources.
The research station is an invaluable resource for those studying on the degree programme ‘Horticulture – Production, Commerce, Services’ and majoring in pomiculture. This enables an education with a solid academic foundation that also has a practical focus, and provides the students with a range of opportunities as regards practical work and thesis topics.
