Network Latin America aims to promote the exchange of knowledge, ideas and concepts in the field of applied, academic education in life sciences, as well as to encourage networking between contacts at Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT) and Latin American universities. Through this project, a contribution can be made to overcoming the numerous challenges in agriculture in Latin America and to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The challenges facing agriculture include the impact of climate change, such as the increasing frequency of extreme climate events, an expanding population and, as a result, growing, changing demand for food alongside land resource reductions and land degradation, increasing conflicts between small-scale agriculture and large agricultural companies/operations, as well as political and social instability. The production of agricultural goods and the associated value chains are a key factor in Latin America’s economic development. Therefore, issues such as (sustainable) land, water, energy and resource usage are becoming more and more significant.
With its consistent focus on engineering degree programmes in the field of life sciences and comprehensive practice-oriented teaching and research in line with the motto 'Applied Sciences for Life', Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT) offers unique potential for networking and for knowledge sharing and transfer with Latin American universities and research institutions. This is making a significant contribution to the knowledge society and sustainable agricultural and socio-ecological development in Latin America. Network Latin America aims to strengthen partnership development and collaboration with Latin American universities and research institutions in the long term, and to support networking between university members with regard to Latin America. The goals of Network Latin America are directly linked to the university’s internationalisation strategy, 'HSWT goes International'.
