Professor for Energy and Materials Engineering

The aim is to take a holistic view of the use of renewable energies, with a focus on bioenergy and solar thermal energy, for the provision of final energy (heating, cooling, power/electricity). In addition to the technical processes, economic and ecological aspects are also dealt with. The analysis refers on the one hand to Germany, but also to the EU countries and the rest of the world.

In addition, the rational use of energy (incl. approaches to energy demand reduction and load control) represents another important pillar of future energy supply, which is taught using examples from industry with a focus on thermal energy efficiency by means of exercises and external courses.

The fundamentals of materials are taught in theory and illustrative practical experiments in the 3rd semester of the bachelor's degree programmes KE and IW. The latter cover the topics:

• Heat treatment of metals (steel, aluminium)
• Behaviour of metallic two-material mixtures
• Detection of plastics (thermoplastics, thermosets)
• Use of ultrasonic testing sensors to detect defects and for level measurement

The basics of life cycle assessment are taught in the KE course in the 4th semester; this is done, among other things, with the help of the LC(I)A software programme:

• UMBERTO® LCA+ (energy and life cycle assessment calculation programme of ifu Hamburg GmbH).

In the Master's programme in Environmental Engineering (MUT), a more in-depth insight into process simulation is provided in the summer semester by means of exercises with the following software programmes:

• EBSILON® (cycle calculation programme of STEAG Energie Systeme GmbH)
• UMBERTO® LCA+ (energy and life cycle assessment calculation programme by ifu Hamburg GmbH)
• POLYSUN® (RE system planning programme of Vela Solaris GmbH)

We are happy to supervise Bachelor's theses from the degree programmes Technology of Renewable Energies (TE), Water Technology (WT), Environmental Engineering (US) and project and Master's theses from the Master's degree programme Environmental Engineering (MUT) or Energy Management and Technology (EMT). The following subject areas (in alphabetical order) can be served:

• Bioenergy, solar thermal energy, photovoltaics, geothermal energy, hybrid systems.
• 3D printing (Ulitmaker S5), light section scanner EinScan-SP (Platinium) and photogrammetry programme Metashape Professional
• De-/ Central thermal storage and local heating networks
• Energy management / energy audit (e.g. according to DIN EN ISO 50001, 16247-1)
• Membrane separation processes for separating CO2 from weak gases
• Measurement and control technology (e.g. with LabView)
• Life cycle assessment (LCA, LCIA, KEA, etc.)
• Potential analyses (individual objects or supply areas)
• Process chain analysis
• Process simulation (Polysun®, Ebsilon®, Umberto® LCA+)
• Thermal energy efficiency (industry, tertiary sector, private sector) / heat integration (e.g. waste heat utilisation at biogas plants)
• Combustion plant for biogenic solid fuels with condensing technology (incl. emission measurements)
• Hydrogen technology (including fuel cells, H2 sources)
• Materials technology (materials testing, process optimisation)
