Frequently asked questions and answers
-
What do the indications in letters and numbers (e.g. A2, B1) in the course descriptions mean?
The letters and numbers in the course descriptions refer to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), which shows comparable levels of knowledge and skills for different European languages.
In order to better assess your current language skills, it would be useful to read the descriptions of the different levels and the skills assigned to you on the relevant pages of the Goethe-Institut.
-
How do I know which level suits me?
Twice a semester, we offer you a comprehensive system of oral, electronic or general placement tests so that you can find the right course for you or prove your language competence for a scholarship application.
At the Language Centre, we will be happy to advise you personally about our general and specialised language courses, semester-long courses and block courses during the semester break, our placement system, the UNIcert® certificate and language certificates for outgoing students.
-
Are school certificates recognised as proof of language proficiency?
The information in your school report regarding the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) should only be seen as an orientation, as it refers to the respective grade level in general and does not directly include the corresponding grades that you have achieved.
For this reason, school reports are not recognised as proof of language proficiency for participation in our language courses.
The results of our language tests may well differ from the information in your school report.
-
When do I have to take a language test?
Taking a placement test (oral: Spanish, French, Italian, Russian / electronic: English) is a prerequisite for participation in:
- all UNIcert® courses
- all specialised English courses
You can find more answers about the placement tests, course and exam registration, recognition of language courses, etc. on our intranet.
