Horticulture and Food Technology department

Whether production and quality management in Horticulture or product development and process engineering in Food Technology: the Department of Horticulture and Food Technology works on sustainable food and its production.

Horticulture and Food Technology: Qualification for managerial functions

The department's mission is to qualify students for management positions in companies and organisations in the Horticulture and Food Industry. The aim of the lecturers is to lay the foundations that will either enable students to successfully enter professional life immediately after graduation or open up prospects for further academic training. This could, for example, be a Master's degree programme or a doctorate.

The courses offered on the degree programmes are always geared towards the needs and current issues of companies and institutions operating in the respective sector.

Close link between theory and practice in studies and research

Since the connection to practice is of particular importance for the education of students at the University of applied sciences, a corresponding appointment practice for professors ensures that this connection is and remains guaranteed at the department. In addition, several measures ensure this close link between the University of applied sciences and the professional world:

  • applied research projects
  • Seminar, project and final theses in companies
  • Awarding of teaching assignments
  • internal & external further education programmes

The department works closely with the Centre for Research and Knowledge Transfer . At the Institute of Horticulture and the Institute for Food Technology, students have a wide range of opportunities for experimental work and applied research under the management of the respective lecturers. Horticulture students also benefit from the Weihenstephan Gardens. The dual study models(Horticulture and Food Technology) represent a further starting point for combining study and practice.

International projects & interdisciplinary exchange

A wide range of cooperation agreements with foreign universities of applied sciences enable students to complete a semester abroad. There is a special cooperation with the Agrocampus Ouest in Angers / France: by coordinating teaching and learning content and developing a joint course programme, students have the opportunity to obtain two academic degrees (B. Sc. Horticulture and Ingénieur Grade Master of the Agrocampus Ouest-Centre d'Angers).
