Research
"My research focuses on the development and application of digital methods in Landscape Architecture and Planning to contribute to solutions to the pressing challenges of sustainable development."
Complex problems such as the impacts of climate change, the energy transition and ongoing urbanisation require information-based approaches to sustainable development to mitigate the degradation of our landscapes. My research is guided by the idea of geodesign. Geodesign describes the design of the earth (geo) or landscape using geoinformation systems. Related topics include the provision of environmental data for decisions on infrastructure projects and sustainable land use, digital modelling of planned construction projects using Building Information Models (BIM), smart cities, the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) systems or colloquially "drones" for data collection, and the use of virtual reality / augmented reality for visualising planning projects in public participation.

- Since 2017 Professor of Geodesign and Landscape Informatics at HSWT - Germany's first professorship in Geodesign.
- 2012 - 2017 Lecturer at the University of Sheffield, UK, in GIS, Landscape Character Assessment and Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment as part of Environmental Impact Assessment.
- 2008 - 2012 Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of British Columbia (Canada) - research on landscape visualisations and educational games as tools for communicating climate change adaptation and mitigation.
- 2003 - 2008 PhD student and research assistant at ETH Zurich in the EU FP5 research project VisuLands

- In addition to research activities at ETH Zurich, UBC Vancouver and University of Sheffield, freelance work on a project basis for private planning offices, international engineering firms, energy providers and real estate companies
