Tools, courses & equipment for digital teaching
The University of applied sciences Weihenstephan-Triesdorf not only has modern IT and lecture hall technology, but also offers a contemporary teaching and learning infrastructure. Students benefit from modern e-learning courses or online modules. The Centre for Studies and Didactics supports teachers in finding the optimal format for their own courses, moderates the dialogue and exchange of experience among teachers and also incorporates student feedback and ideas into new developments.

Digital offers and tools for teaching
The following three main digital tools are available at the HSWT to complement teaching:
- the Moodle learning platform
- the web conference tool Zoom
- the video platform Panopto
Video workshop: the HSWT video studios
At both the Weihenstephan and Triesdorf campuses, teachers and students can use our good equipped video studios to produce teaching videos or implement video projects - from professional planning to image and sound recording to editing and completion.
Our video workshop is a place where:
- video enthusiasts can exchange ideas,
- technical equipment is made available,
- training courses on the subject of „video production“ take place and
- support is provided for the realisation of video projects.
Thefollowing three main types of equipment are available in the video workshop:

Video backpack for student projects: Video equipment for quick projects. It can be borrowed against proof of insurance and a one-time introduction.

Semi-professional equipment: Semi-professional equipment for film projects by teachers. Training on the use of the equipment is required.

Video streaming/livestreams: for streaming and live editing.
Digital projects at the University of applied sciences
HAnS - BayZiel
The Centre for Studies and Didactics of the HSWT participates in the joint project „HAnS“ (University of applied sciences assistance system) with eight other universities under the coordination of the TH Nuremberg. The objective of the „HAnS“ project is an intelligent University of applied sciences assistant system that collects teaching and learning materials from different subjects in audio and video format on a learning experience platform. The materials are to be prepared for further applications in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) with the help of speech recognition. The teaching material will thus be made searchable and automatically compiled according to criteria such as subject area, language or required prior knowledge.
A total of 40 individual projects and 14 collaborative projects are being funded with a funding amount of five million euros within the framework of the Federal-Länder funding initiative „Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education“.
Mariane Hunger from the Centre for Studies and Didactics and sub-project leader Prof. Dr. Niall Palfreyman are participating cooperatively with the Bavarian Centre for Innovative Teaching (BayZiel) in the sub-project „Didactics“.
„AIffectiveness in Education“ project
The „AIffectiveness in Education“ project is investigating the influence of an AI-based assistance system on students' learning success. The „OneTutor“ tool, which was developed at the Technical University of Munich, combines live chat and interactive quiz formats to actively support students during lectures and self-study. The aim is to analyse, on the basis of quantitative and qualitative data, whether learning processes can be made more sustainable through the use of such systems. The relationship between subjective enjoyment of learning and actual academic success will also be analysed.
The University of Applied Sciences Weihenstephan-Triesdorf is part of a broad Bavarian partner network coordinated by the Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation (bidt). As part of the project, various lecturers at the HSWT are evaluating „OneTutor“ in their courses. Teachers and students are closely involved in the accompanying scientific research. The data collection is anonymous and includes the use of the tool as well as feedback on learning behaviour, motivation and perceived effectiveness.
The project pursues an interdisciplinary, empirically based approach and contributes to the evidence-based further development of AI applications in university teaching. The results will serve as a basis for future decisions on the use of digital assistance systems at universities of applied sciences and in education policy.

vhb projects & vhb.org: Virtual University of Bavaria
With the Virtual University of Bavaria (vhb), a cooperation institution of the Free State of Bavaria, Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences has been participating in countless vhb courses since 2012, thus supporting and passing on the idea of sharing and networking digital teaching. Our vhb courses are also available to everyone beyond the university boundaries.
Project Instructional Designer@vhb
The aim of the project is to develop innovative teaching and learning materials that meet the needs of lecturers and students:
- Information for lecturers on funding programmes offered by Virteullen University of applied sciences Bayern (vhb) relating to digital, cross-university teaching.
- Advice from the initial project idea to conceptualising and applying for funding through to the actual design of courses.
- Support in the design of appealing, interactive learning materials and formats.
The project promotes the exchange of good practices and supports the integration of new, cross-university programmes into teaching.
Details of the Virtual University of Bavaria programme
The Virtual University of Bavaria (vhb) is an association of 36 universities and universities of applied sciences in Bavaria that promotes the development and implementation of online teaching programmes. vhb currently offers the following formats that can be used in teaching, as well as a further programme for the interested public:
- CLASSIC vhb courses are complete online learning units supervised by lecturers and tutors, which can be used to gain ECTS points for the degree programme. The courses are available free of charge to all students of the sponsoring universities (including HSWT). The scope of the courses offered varies depending on the subject discipline.
- The SMART vhb programme provides approximately 45-minute online learning units that can be flexibly integrated into eLearning courses or as a blended learning offer in classroom teaching. They are also designed for cross-university use.
- The OPEN vhb programme is open to everyone - enrolment at a University of applied sciences is not necessary. In-depth knowledge on a wide range of topics relevant to (everyday) life is taught via interactive self-study courses lasting around 15 hours.
- The vhb's latest offering is the OER area. Here, open online educational units are shared under a creative commons licence.
