Augustiner-Bräu Wagner KG promotes biodiversity: with clear environmental goals - and with a sponsor tree in the arboretum

For the oldest, still-existing brewery in Munich, quality, tradition and regionality mark the main pillars of the company philosophy. By implementing these corporate goals, the environmental concept is clearly in focus: "The endeavour to protect the environment is an obligation for us - towards our customers, our fellow human beings and future generations," says the management.

Werner Mayer, Managing Director of the brewery, also emphasises the sustainable orientation of the EMAS company (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) in the current Environmental Statement 2021: "For us, protecting our environment is an important part of securing the future of Augustiner-Bräu Wagner KG. We want to live up to our social obligation and keep the environmental impact from producing our beers as low as possible." For Augustiner, EMAS means actively promoting the economical and efficient use of energy and resources, avoiding waste wherever possible and fundamentally promoting biodiversity. It is precisely against the latter background that the Augustiner Brewery decided to sponsor a tree. With a view to a continuous improvement of the environmental output of the company, the red ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica "Cimmzam") in the arboretum is a measure of many. "We hope that the Augustiner Brewery tree will not only grow and thrive over the next 50 years but also allow many other plants and animals to have a habitat in symbiosis with it.

But for Konrad Stuffer, the brewery's environmental officer, trees mean much more: "Literally 'rooted' and virtually immovable in their place, trees survive the centuries, defy the seasons, the weather ... and every spring they symbolise life and fertility when they sprout, blossom and bear fruit. For me, the small wonders of nature become visible here." Konrad Stuffer is as connected to nature as his brewery is to the University of Applied Sciences Weihenstephan-Triesdorf. After all, many graduate brewmasters, bachelor's and dual students at Augustiner completed their training at the HSWT. There is a lively professional exchange with the institutes, professors and staff in all brewing areas.

Many members of Augustiner-Bräu Wagner KG are often on campus themselves. They meet for seminars, lectures or other appointments, and some even live in Freising, says the deputy head of the technology department, Stuffer. They all wish that the knowledge gained from HSWT's applied research could be implemented practically and economically - by companies, institutions and private individuals - in feasible measures and processes to limit climate change and preserve our environment.
