Prof. Dr Claudia Brand

What fascinates you about being an HAW professor?

For me, this profession actually means having a mission: I love sharing my knowledge in lectures, tutorials and internships and accompanying young people. Being able to decide unrestricted what I want to focus on, combined with numerous opportunities in a wide range of areas to get involved in shaping things - that's fun!

What do you particularly appreciate about HSWT?

HSWT is like a home port, which also has, what I consider, the most beautiful campus in Bavaria.

What was your personal path to the HAW professorship? Where did you gain practical experience outside the University of applied sciences?

After my doctorate in computer science, I worked for ten years in a medium-sized company, first as a project engineer and later as a project manager in the field of automation software - an exciting time. I gained teaching experience during my doctorate and realised it was very enriching. At that time, I was working on the application of artificial intelligence methods in automation technology. Later, I took on teaching assignments at HSWT in mathematics and computer science. The announcement of my professorship at HSWT was a stroke of luck for me.

What challenges have you successfully mastered during your time as a professor?

The use of digital teaching and activating teaching methods long before the pandemic. It enabled me to focus on the implementation of my internships, which only makes sense in presence since March 2020: many things had to be reorganised and thought through. I didn't want a stopgap solution: my internships are now different, but no less so. So I found a well-dosed mix of online and face-to-face teaching for my courses.

What is your most important recommendation to women interested in this profession?

Apply, gain application experience, and take advantage of the many offers for women, such as the seminar "Berufsziel Professorin an einer HAW" (Career goal: Professor at an HAW) by LaKoF Bayern.
