The following guest lecturers will present and discuss with you their research projects in the field of water resources management on the African continent.
8:15 Somo Guyo: JangaVoice: Community-driven Water Monitoring and Climate Resilience in Northern Kenya
We will look at practical applications of hydrological data and community-based monitoring. The session introduces the hydrological context of Marsabit County (Arid and Semi Arid Lands), outline key groundwater challenges, and demonstrate how JangaVoice enables real-time reporting of borehole breakdowns, water quality issues, and flooding to improve water governance and resilience.
10:00 Ismail Bouizrou: Building Resilience in Drylands: Integrating Modeling, Remote Sensing, and Nature-Based Solutions
Dryland ecosystems are highly sensitive, characterized by shallow soils, sparse vegetation, and frequent extreme events such as droughts, which amplify water scarcity risks. Effective water resource management in these regions is challenged by data scarcity and high climatic variability.
The presentation highlights how modeling, remote sensing, and nature-based solutions can be integrated to improve water management, support decision-making, and enhance resilience in dryland environments.
10:45 Ilaria Tedesco: Green Future Project
Green Futures aims to create a bridge between academic knowledge and practical solutions for farmers, students and entrepreneurs in Southern Africa. The ultimate goal is to empower marginalised groups while addressing regional and local issues such as climate change, agricultural waste management, biodiversity, indigenous crops and need for food innovation. The project runs in collaboration with Stellenbosch University and University of Zambia and it is financed by BMLEH (Germany).
This event is part of HSWT's contributions to the Public Climate School, the open climate university. The wide range of activities on the topic of climate are free of charge and open to anyone interested – whether school pupils, prospective students, city residents, university students, employees, experts or practitioners: everyone is welcome.
