Research topics - LUNAR

LUNAR is the acronym for the working group Land Use and Natural Resources. The group is part of the Department of Woods and Forestry of the University of Applied Sciences (HSWT) and has a strong research focus on land use and natural resources, especially soil and water. Researchers working with the group have a long standing experience in land use related research. Since 2011 international projects in Brazil, China, Peru and South Africa have been carried out by LUNAR. Additionally, scientists working with LUNAR have experiences with projects in Germany. Research topics are either landscape related research on effects of land use or focusing on soil formation and soil conservation.

LUNAR has a strong expertise in analyzing, assessing and simulating effects of land use on soil and water resources and developing computer/web based systems to manage soil, water and land resources in national and international context. The focus of all projects is the triade soil-water-land use. Research topics are (i) simulation and assessment of effects of land use on soil, water and ecosystem services, (ii) land management and sustainable use of resources, and (iii) catchment hydrology.

Forestal-pastoral systems in the Cerrado, Brazil
Simulation of land use scenarios for the Cerrado, Brazil (Koschke et al. 2014)
Reservoir with low water level in the Western Cape, South Africa
Simulation of discharge for the Western Cape (Gebel et al. 2017)

The second focus of LUNAR is on soil, mostly in forested areas. Within this context research topics are (i) assessment and conservation of soil functions in the Cerrado region, Brazil, (e) conservation of forest soils and (f) critical zone and soil formation.

Degraded site In Brasília, Brazil
Restoration of degraded site with sewage sludge, Brasília, Brazil
Acidic forest soil with thick rohhumus layer, NW Germany
Texture contrast soil, SE Germany

Currently, members of the LUNAR team are Prof. Dr. C. Lorz, M.Sc. Vanessa Oliveira and M.Sc. Hanlie Malherbe.

Current partners of LUNAR are national, e.g. Helmholtzzentrum für Umweltforschung-UFZ, European Land Use Institute (ELI), University of Leipzig, Gesellschaft für Angewandte Landschaftsforschung (GALF) and other, and international, e.g. EMBRAPA Cerrados (Brazil), Universidade Federal de Itajuba (Brazil), Universidade de Brasília (Brazil), Sino-German Research Center for Environmental Information Sciences (China), Chinese Academy of Science (China), University of Stellenbosch (South Africa), and other.
