Master’s programme in Resilient Horticulture: What to expect

The Master’s programme in Resilient Horticulture not only enables you to acquire in-depth knowledge of international horticulture but also offers opportunities to broaden your horizons and understanding cultural, geographical and social issues in different countries. This will broaden your mind from a national perspective to incorporate international horticultural requirements, networks and trends. Studying international horticultural science at HSWT will prepare you to take on management roles in companies that have close links with overseas production – or wish to employ you in their operations abroad.

International commodity flows between the southern and northern hemispheres require international knowledge, taking account of the respective countries’ regulations and quality requirements. The sustainable and resilient production and marketing of horticultural crops involves specific challenges and calls for both cultural and cultivation-specific knowledge, including social aspects.

After successfully completing the degree programme, you will be able to act with confidence on the international stage, applying the knowledge gained during your studies.

Master’s in Resilient Horticulture: Programme structure

In the winter semester, the programme covers two blocks: “Research, Management and Communication Methods” and “Resilient Plant Production”. In the summer semester, you will acquire in-depth knowledge in the areas of “Management”, “Food Technology” and “Technology”. You will strengthen your management skills and further your knowledge of key links in the international horticulture value chain and of international horticultural sciences more broadly – always focusing in sustainability and resilience. At the same time, you will have ample opportunity to develop your language skills and refine your profile through our range of elective modules.

Following the two theoretical semesters, you will apply and develop your international horticulture skills in the practical semester. This is an opportunity for you to grow your network in Germany, Europe and around the world. You can gain in-depth insights into your future duties as a manager in an international company or at an institution specialising in applied horticultural research. A parallel module during the practical semester will help you stay in touch with the university and your classmates.

In your final semester, you will produce your Master’s thesis. This allows you to apply the knowledge you have acquired to a practically relevant research topic. Your aim will be to develop solutions to current issues in global horticulture and continue your development in your chosen specialism. A collective Master’s seminar with your classmates will provide opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange and promote networking in your future professional field.
