Master’s in Renewable Energy: What to expect

The Master’s degree programme in Business Management and Entrepreneurship in Renewable Energy examines the growth of renewable energy technologies from a holistic perspective, including the technical, economic, legal and political background. In Germany, the energy transition has ushered in an unprecedented revolution in energy supply processes. This upheaval, centred around the explosive growth of renewable energy in Germany, also creates business opportunities for innovative companies in the national, European and international arena. The Master’s programme integrates a number of these young, dynamic enterprises to addresses renewable energy management and sustainability.

The programme is designed to help you develop the management skillsessential for this promising professional field. Besides furthering subject-specific skills in relation to alternative energy generation technologies, a key objective is for students to learn entrepreneurial behaviours and to acquire management and leadership skills. You will also gain intercultural skills and become proficient in business English.

Master’s in Renewable Energy: Programme structure

Full-time students complete the degree programme in three semesters. The first two semesters consist of six modules each. The third semester is reserved exclusively for students to work on their Master’s thesis.

A Master’s programme with close links to practice in renewables

This practice-focused Master’s programme integrates companies from the energy industry. Lecturers and speakers with practical experience contribute their expertise to the programme. Several modules establish direct links with practice and research through case studies, guest lectures and group projects. The most pronounced practical links are usually provided by the Master’s thesis, with students encouraged to pursue a project in close cooperation with an industry company wherever possible, whether in Germany or abroad.

Admission requirements for the Master’s in Business Management and Entrepreneurship in Renewable Energy

Admission to the Master’s programme at Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences is subject to the following admission requirements:

  • A successfully completed undergraduate (Bachelor’s) degree in a technical or economics-related subject – with a focus on energy, and ideally renewable energy.
  • If you hold a Bachelor’s degree in a different subject, you must demonstrate basic knowledge in the field of energy (usually via successfully completed modules, whether elective or compulsory, during your Bachelor’s degree programme). When we receive your application documents, we will review whether your past studies are sufficient. In certain cases, students may be able to compensate for a lack of energy-specific knowledge during the Master’s degree programme by taking up to four compulsory modules from our Bachelor's degree programme in Management of Renewable Energy. Please contact us at beratung.mee@hswt.de to discuss this.

  • Classes are predominantly held in German. Foreign students whose native language is not German must therefore demonstrate  German language proficiency of at least Level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
  • Regarding the four English-language modules of the Master’s degree programme in Renewable Energy, students should ideally have English language proficiency of at least Level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The HSWT Language Centre offers a voluntary aptitude test to assess language skills. If necessary, students can take appropriate language courses to work towards Level B2 through the Language Centre.

Application & application deadlines for the Master’s programme at HSWT

Applications for the Master’s in Renewable Energy must be submitted online. The application period for the summer semester runs from the beginning of December to 15 January; the application period for the winter semester runs from the beginning of May to 15 July.

Prospective students who obtained their  undergraduate (Bachelor’s) degree outside of Germany must obtain Preliminary Review Documentation (Vorprüfungsdokumentation – VPD) from uni-assist to apply for the Master’s programme in Business Management and Entrepreneurship in Renewable Energy. You can find detailed information on our international students information page. A test report (Testbericht) from uni-assist is not sufficient.
