Living in Freising
The city of Freising is known for its high quality of life, good transport connections to Munich and a rich cultural offering, making it the ideal location for your academic success. We have summarised some useful tips and links for you to help make your flat search a success.
Living in and around Freising - tips for students
Anyone starting a degree programme at our beautiful campus in Freising will sooner or later ask themselves the question: Where will I live? The city of Freising and the surrounding area offer a wide range of housing options - from rooms in shared flats and flats to places in halls of residence. At the same time, the housing market is tight, especially in the greater Munich area. This makes it all the more important to inform yourself early on and look for specific accommodation.
What should you look out for when looking for a flat?
- Start the search early
-
Demand is particularly high in the winter semester. If you start your search in good time - ideally several months before the start of the semester - you have a better chance.
- Search outside of Freising
-
It is somewhat easier to find accommodation in the area around Freising (e.g. Zolling, Attenkirchen, Kirchdorf, Nandlstadt). However, this only makes sense if you are mobile and have a car.
You can also commute quickly from Marzling, Langenbach or Moosburg to Freisingby regional train.
The S-Bahn line with stops in Pulling, Neufahrn or Eching will also get you to Freising in 15 minutes at the latest. A possible alternative for starting your studies!
- Beware of fraud
-
Never transfer the rent/deposit/agency fee in advance! Also beware of dubious offers (e.g. alternative ways of paying the rent).
Where can I search for accommodation?
Affordable housing for students in the greater Munich area is scarce. It is therefore worth considering various housing options.
Halls of residence of the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern
Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern offers three halls of residence in Freising. You can apply for a place in a hall of residence before the start of your studies from 15 May for the following winter semester and from 15 November for the following summer semester. Due to the high demand for affordable accommodation, there is a waiting period before places are allocated.
Good to know! The Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern also maintains a list of privately offered rooms. There are also links to other accommodation offers on the website.
Private flat search
The easiest and quickest way is to use housing exchanges and online platforms. You can also find a good and helpful compilation of internet portals and accommodation agencies at the Youth Information Centre of the City of Munich.
Regional newspapers with property markets
You can also find them in the property sections of regional daily newspapers.
- Freisinger Tagblatt (part of the Münchner Merkur media group)
- Süddeutsche Zeitung - especially the property section at the weekend
Tips for flat hunters
- Use networks: You can often find out about available rooms from fellow students, student councils or university groups. Notices at the University of applied sciences (e.g. on the notice board in the Canteen) can also be helpful.
- Plan your commute: You can often get to campus quickly on the S-Bahn or by bike. A flat along the S1 (e.g. in Neufahrn or Eching) can be a good and cheaper alternative.
- Check out interim rentals: If you are looking for something at short notice, you may find it more quickly by renting for an interim period (e.g. for a semester) - e.g. when other students are doing their practical semester.
- Visit properties in person: It's worth making a personal impression, especially with private listings. You should be vigilant with online offers - offers that seem too good to be true are unfortunately often dubious.
- We also recommend that you place your own SEARCH advert online, as some people do not advertise their vacant room publicly, but search for and write to people specifically - the aim is to „be found“!
Our conclusion
Accommodation in Freising is in high demand - but with patience, flexibility and the right contact points, you can get off to a smooth start in terms of accommodation.
