Re-registration

According to Article 48 Paragraph 1 of the Bavarian Higher Education Act, all students must register correctly and in due time to continue their studies before the start of each semester (re-registration). Students who fail to comply with this obligation must be de-registered from the university (Article 49 Paragraph 2 Number 4 of the Bavarian Higher Education Act).

The exact deadlines and formalities for re-registering for a given semester can be found in the re-registration announcement issued by Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences.

Students are only re-registered once their semester fee has been received by the Staatsoberkasse.

Payment procedure

Currently, the only way of paying the semester fee is by bank transfer. The university’s bank account details and your individual payment reference is available on the Student.Online portal from 18 June 2018.

The semester fee for the 2018/19 winter semester is € 129,40 for students studying in Freising (€ 62 student union fee and € 67,40 solidarity contribution for the semester ticket) and € 42 for students studying in Triesdorf (student union fee).

Once your semester fee has been received by the Staatsoberkasse you are automatically re-registered.

Please note that you are only re-registered if your semester fee is credited by 9 July 2018 at the latest.

Leave of absence

Application deadlines

Leaves of absence must be requested

  • by 15 October for the winter semester and
  • by 31 March for the summer semester.

If a valid reason for requesting a leave of absence does not arise until later and was not foreseeable, students may make their request

  • by 30 November for the winter semester and
  • by 15 May for the summer semester.

Reasons for taking a leave of absence

Leaves of absence may only be taken for a valid reason. In particular, valid reasons include:

  • an illness attested by a medical certificate that affects your ability to study during the semester in question
  • circumstances that entitle employees to maternity or parental leave
  • for the care of a close relative in accordance with the German Home Care Leave Act (Pflegezeitgesetz)
  • a period of study at a university abroad
  • completion of a voluntary work placement that is not required under the relevant study and examination regulations
  • completion of statutory military or community service
  • a placement abroad that is beneficial to the student’s studies
  • failure to complete the semester following an exemption from the practical training semester.

Other reasons are only deemed valid following a strict evaluation of the individual case in question. Financial difficulties are generally not considered to be a valid reason.

General information

Leaves of absence must be applied for in writing. Evidence must be provided to substantiate the reason given for the request. As a general rule, leaves of absence are granted for one semester and must last for no longer than two semesters. Maternity/parental leave and leave to care for a close relatve do not count towards the above limits. For bachelor’s degree programmes a leave of absence cannot be granted for the 1st semester or from the 9th semester onwards, and for master’s degree programmes, the same is true for the 1st semester and from the 5th semester onwards. A semester that has already come to an end may not subsequently be recorded as having been taken as a leave of absence.

Semesters taken as leave do not count as semesters of study.

Deadlines for taking resits/examinations for the first time

As a general rule, deadlines for taking resits and the bachelor’s or master’s examination are neither suspended nor automatically extended by a leave of absence, unless the leave of absence is due to pregnancy, childcare, illness or other reasons beyond your control.

In principle, only resits may be taken during a leave of absence. Exceptions: first examinations can also be taken during a leave of absence for maternity/paternity leave or leave to care for a close relative.

Semester fee

The semester fee must be paid in full during the leave of absence.

Practical training semester

Credits and exemptions

To allow the practical semester to be credited, an application must be submitted through Student.Service no later than two weeks after the start of the study semester prior to the practical semester. Exemptions to this (such as a division, interruption or semester abroad) must be applied for via the Office for Practical Study.

Practical training contracts

Contracts with the companies in which the practical training will be undertaken must be submitted to the Work Placement Office in good time. The Work Placement Office is located on the top floor (above the cafeteria) of the Alte Akademie Building at the Weihenstephan campus of the TU München.

Practical training reports

The reports to be written during the practical semester must be handed in to the Student.Service office.
Exceptions: Students studying in the Department of Agriculture and Food Economy and the Department of Horticulture and Food Technology must submit their reports to the respective Department Chair’s Office.

Placements abroad

Placements abroad must be approved by the student’s department. Please contact your department’s Officer for Practical Study to seek approval.

If you have any questions about the financial support available for placements abroad, please contact the International Office.

Theses

Bachelor’s and master’s theses

The aim of the bachelor’s or master’s thesis is to demonstrate that a student is able to solve a problem related to their course of study independently and by drawing on scientific and/or artistic knowledge.

Completion deadlines

The time taken to write a bachelor’s thesis must not exceed

  • five months if the bachelor’s thesis question is set no later than one month after the start of the seventh semester of teaching or
  • three months in all other cases.

The amount of time permitted for writing the master’s thesis is laid down in the relevant study and examination regulations.

Extensions of up to three months may be granted.

Important note

Please make sure that the completion deadline for your thesis does not extend beyond the deadline for completing your bachelor’s or master’s examination (bachelor’s: nine semesters; master’s: standard duration of study + two semesters). If this occurs and an appropriate extension has not been granted, the thesis shall be recorded as having been submitted for the first time and failed on the first attempt.

Writing a thesis abroad

If you would like to write your thesis abroad, you may address any questions concerning financial support to the International Office.

Academic equivalence certification

International equivalence agencies are able to obtain information about the German education system from the German Central Office for Foreign Education (Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen, ZAB) in order to facilitate the assessment and recognition by other countries of education and training received in Germany.

On request, the ZAB can issue equivalence certificates which are an invaluable aid in determining qualifications in other countries equivalent to those that can be acquired in Germany. These equivalence certificates describe the structure of the completed degree programme in each case and make reference to/assign an equivalence in terms of the higher education system of the country in question.

De-registration

Types of de-registration

  • De-registration at your own request

You may choose to de-register from the university at any time. To do so, you must submit an informal written request together with a certificate from the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences Library to the students’ administrative office. It is not possible to de-register retrospectively. Deadlines for taking resits are not suspended as a result of de-registration.

  • De-registration due to a failure to re-register

To continue with your degree, you must re-register each semester within the stipulated period of time. If you do not re-register by the deadline, the university will assume that you do not wish to continue your studies.

  • De-registration due to failure of the bachelor’s or master’s examination with no further opportunities for resits

If facts emerge during the course of your degree that suggest that it will not be possible for you to graduate successfully, you will be de-registered from the university. Reasons for de-registering a student include failing resits and missing the deadlines for taking resits or final examinations.
