Biotechnology is a strongly interdisciplinary academic field. Based on scientific principles in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, biotechnological analysis and production procedures are developed, applying interdisciplinary knowledge from the fields of microbiology, genetic engineering, biochemistry, and process engineering. These procedures are used in the manufacture of many everyday products, such as pharmaceuticals, amino acids, wine, bread, detergent enzymes, and many others.
