The Hofgarten

The park-like Hofgarten encompasses the former core area of the monastery garden of the Benedictine monks who once lived in Weihenstephan. At its centre is the Salettl, an imposing baroque building renovated in the 1990s, which was the former garden casino of the Weihenstephan abbots. The Hofgarten took on its current appearance after several remodelling projects around 1950, with a remarkable stock of trees, a variety of perennials and seasonal border plantings that are impressive at any time of year.

The dominant trees are striking copper beeches, an old ginkgo and stately specimens of silver maple and gingerbread tree. In spring, blooming magnolias attract attention. A visitor magnet is the western viewing terrace, which offers a fantastic view of the Alps in good weather.
