Chair for Geodesign and Landscape Informatics
As one of the first higher education institutions in Germany with its own teaching in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the department of Landscape Architecture and the Landscape Informatics Centre (LIZ) based there can look back on over 30 years of experience in the field of GIS. In 2017, the professorship was renamed Geodesign and Landscape Informatics in the course of reappointment to express the desired convergence of GIS and design. Our teaching covers the whole range of digital methods in landscape architecture, both in the Bachelor's programme and in the international Master's IMLA.
In our research, geodesign stands for the connection of the creative design process with systems theory and the analytical possibilities of geographic information systems, the testing of designs in simulations and with the help of impact analyses. Geodesign is supported by digital methods of online cooperation.
We are the counterpart for complex questions at the landscape level that are to be solved in participatory planning processes. In addition to bachelor's and master's theses, we attract third-party funding from the EU, the federal government, Bavarian ministries and the industry. In association with universities, we are also interested in qualifying doctoral students.
The Landscape Informatics Centre (LIZ) has computer capacity, software and expertise in the areas of Computer Aided Drawing (CAD) and 3D modelling, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) including spatial analysis and environmental modelling, photogrammetry using drones in Landscape Architecture.

Landscape Informatics
In Landscape Informatics, we look at the potential and application of digital methods in Landscape Architecture. This is not only about the application of digital methods such as CAD, 3D modelling and photomontage for the representation of designs, but in addition about the digitalisation of the entire design and implementation process. This includes the utilisation of new sensors and platforms from remote sensing and laser scanning for data collection, spatial analyses with the help of geographic information systems (GIS), spatial modelling for testing design scenarios and the optimisation of communication with other stakeholders with the help of building information models (BIM).
