CUBES Circle - Closed urban modular energy- and resource-efficient agricultural systems

CUBES Circle strives for the realization and testing of sustainable, energy- and resource-efficient resource-efficient production of healthy food through the smart networking of aquaculture networking of aquaculture, insect and plant production in a variable, resilient and resilient and adaptable closed-loop system. To this end, communicating and standardized production modules, the so-called CUBES, are being developed. The material flow of the CUBES should ultimately take place in a circle, i.e. the waste products of one CUBES are the raw materials for the next CUBES.

In the first phase, the CUBES production systems were developed. In the current phase (Cubes II), they are now to be further optimized and interconnected. connected with each other. The aim is to have developed the necessary technical technical, agronomic and social concepts required to establish the CUBES Circle CUBES Circle system at selected locations by the end of the second phase. at selected locations. To this end, the appendix is to be operated at full capacity in order to systems and to test various scenarios. For the ecological and economic key figures will then be determined for the overall system. At the same time, cooperation with industrial partners will be expanded to implement key innovations. key innovations is being expanded.

Background and motivation

Cubes aims to combine the cultivation of plants, insects and fish in a sensible and resource-efficient way. combine. The aim is to produce as little waste as possible (zero waste). At the same time, resources are to be saved through innovative technology (water, energy).

CUBES Circle is integrated into the agricultural transformation pathways of the „Agricultural Systems of the Future (AdZ) “integrative indoor production systems„ and “local and regional material material cycle systems". Scientists involved in the project work are playing a leading role in several AdZ working groups. The HSWT is involved with its HSWT is involved in the project with its own external CUBE (the RemoteCube).

Objectives

Consumer-oriented and fair production of food in sustainable agricultural systems - that is the vision of the vision of CUBES Circle.

To this end a closed symbiotic cycle consisting of production modules for resource-efficient resource-efficient production of food will be developed, tested and put into practice. transferred into practice. All outstanding technical and social issues will be questions are to be investigated in the pilot plant in Berlin-Dahlem and in the RemoteCube in Freising-Weihenstephan will be investigated. The aim is also to social actors will also be discussed.

Procedure and methodology

The CUBES Circle joint project is subdivided into three fields of work in which several research groups work together in interdisciplinary sub-projects. After project phase I was successfully completed with an exemplary closing of the sustainable Circle successfully completed, the focus is now on validating the intrinsic material material flows over a longer period of time and the consistent linking with extrinsic material flows. material flows.

  • The field of work A ut utilizes the the pilot plant created in the first project phase for consistent further development and and adaptation to the requirements of the market.
  • In working area B, a pilot plant is being developed for CUBES Circle pilot plant, consisting of the two components process and visual twin. process and visual twin components.
  • The work area C deals with the implementation scenarios.
