From the lecture theatre to the mountain hut: Almex excursion 2026

Setting off, arriving, moving on: for two days, students on the Weihenstephan Agriculture degree programme, accompanied by Prof. Dr Martina Hofmann, an expert in grassland management, and Dr Dr Eva Zeiler, Professor of Animal Production Systems in Organic Farming, explored the alpine learning landscape around Spitzingsee and Rotwand. Early in the morning, the group set off from the campus and reached the Boarhof before the heat of the day set in. There, Agriculture was not merely explained, but brought to life through insights into farm operations and direct marketing. And the snack? No mere afterthought, but a culinary highlight and a subtle reminder that theory sometimes tastes best when it’s good.

Where theory takes on a life of its own and the going gets tougher

After a refreshing break, the group continued towards the Taubensteinbahn; the transition from the farm to the mountain world was almost seamless. Whether on foot for a bit of exercise or more leisurely by gondola and along a high-altitude trail, both routes had their charm and offered the first impressive views of the surrounding Alpine landscape. By the time we were climbing up to the Rotwandhaus together, it had become clear: anyone who takes science seriously is allowed to get a bit out of breath now and then. There were interesting insights into the assessment of grazing animals and grazing systems; lively discussions continued and perspectives were exchanged. At our destination, a well-deserved early dinner awaited us, along with the special tranquillity of the mountains, which brought the day to a atmospheric close.

Enlightenment isn’t just found in the lecture theatre, but also on the summit

The next morning began unusually early, with a spectacular sunrise over the Rotwand. Amidst the golden light and fresh mountain air, any tiredness became a mere afterthought. The route then led to the Großtiefentalalm, where we gained further insights into alpine farming, alpine plants and sustainable land use. The descent via the Soinsee to Geitau provided a peaceful conclusion, and the Almexkursion 2026 thus drew to a close almost casually, yet left a lasting impression and an important insight: Good learning doesn’t always require a roof over your head; sometimes all you need is a pair of sturdy boots, a bit of curiosity and the willingness to think outside the box.
