Niklas Heinzelmann is studying Nutrition and Food Sciences at the University of applied sciences HSWT – without having taken his A-levels. In this interview, he explains how he came to study at the University of applied sciences.

What educational path led you to the University of applied sciences?

Niklas: After finishing secondary school, I started an apprenticeship as a brewer and maltster, which was very challenging at first. After successfully completing my apprenticeship, I worked for another two years at the company where I trained, before spending a further year working at a wine press. To study food science without A-levels, you need three years’ professional experience – I had built that up by then and was able to apply to HSWT.

What motivated you to study at HSWT?

I find the food and nutrition industry incredibly interesting, and it’s great that HSWT offers degree programmes without the need for A-levels. This means that prospective students who opted for an apprenticeship after leaving school can still engage in professional development and specialise in their chosen field. As many of my friends are studying, I’ve already gained a good insight into everyday student life and knew what to expect.

What advice would you give to people who want to start a degree without a school-leaving certificate?

I would advise people without A-levels to research their study options thoroughly and approach their studies with motivation. With good organisation and an interest in the subject, practical experience can be a huge advantage during your studies. But you shouldn’t underestimate the course, especially if you haven’t been in the ‘world of learning’ for a while. However, there are great refresher courses and tutorials available to help you master everything.
