Orchard educational and adventure trail offers tangible knowledge transfer
On 10 October, the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences' orchard educational and adventure trail was presented to representatives:innen from the city and the education sector.
Prof Dr Dominikus Gregor Kittemann, project manager, and Felix Matulla, project manager, welcomed the guests to the Weihenstephaner Nordhang. In addition to Cordula John from the Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Agriculture and Forestry (StMELF), representatives:innen from various institutions were also present - including the tourism department of the Freising district office, the Bavarian Institute of Food, Agriculture and Forestry (LfL) and the Bavarian State Association for Horticulture and Landcare (Bayerischer Landesverband für Horticulture und Landespflege e. V.).
Diversity of the orchard meadow
The aim of the presentation was to show the diversity of the spectrum of knowledge about the orchard meadow. In addition to the subject area of pomology, the orchard also combines biodiversity, tree forms and ecosystem services, for example, which can be focussed on depending on the target group. An overview map at the start of the educational and adventure trail shows the various main and secondary stations as well as the games and hangsofas distributed along the trail. Information boards at the various stations provide information on the relevant topics. In addition, signs on the individual trees provide information about the origin and rootstock of the tree as well as the ripeness, storage and use of the fruit itself.
An apple variety memo, a habitat sliding game and other detailed play stations facilitate the transfer of knowledge for younger visitors. Various key topics relating to the orchard are presented in a playful way. The green classroom next to the educational and adventure trail also invites you to organise creative learning units.
Not all apples are the same
The presentation was rounded off with an apple tasting session for the participants. Old apple varieties from the HSWT orchard were compared with international apple varieties and the use of the different varieties was explained in more detail.
The orchard educational and adventure trail is freely accessible all year round and can be visited by all interested parties, families and school classes. During the summer months, visitors should be considerate of the grazing sheep.
