Green Futures project: Final meeting in Zambia

The project was completed in December 2025 after a final meeting in Livingstone, Zambia, marking the end of twenty-one months of collaboration with great impact.

The project, coordinated by Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT), aimed to close the gap between academic research and practical solutions for farmers, students and key stakeholders in agriculture in southern Africa.

Long-term benefits and knowledge transfer

The project focused on linking research and practice to address the region's most pressing issues: sustainable water management, agricultural waste, biodiversity loss, disappearance of indigenous crops and the growing importance of food innovation and data literacy. Through an extensive network of experts, Green Futures provided practical tools and capacity building measures to achieve long-term benefits on the ground.

Through six work packages, the project partners organised more than 25 knowledge transfer activities, involving hundreds of participants in person or online. The high level of engagement emphasised the high demand for practical advice and the relevance of the topics covered for Agriculture development in the region.

Final meeting offers opportunity for exchange

The final meeting in Livingstone brought together the consortium partners: HSWT, Stellenbosch University, University of Zambia (UNZA), Université du Sine Saloum El-Hâdj Ibrahima Niass (USSEIN) and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST). The meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on joint successes, discuss challenges and lessons learnt and discuss future opportunities for further collaboration.

The HSWT delegation consisted of Prof Dr Carsten Lorz, Vice President for International Affairs, Dr Ilaria Tedesco, Project Coordinator of Green Futures, as well as Dr Tarja Dworrak and Christina Hartmann, both of whom also worked on the project.

The project was made possible by funding from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Home Affairs (BMLEH), with additional support from GFA Consulting Group GmbH.
