Podcast episode: Daring more peatland - the contribution of peatlands to climate protection
The Peatland Science Centre (PSC) is now represented in the „oekom podcast - The good sides of the future“ with its own episode.
In the episode „More peatland! On the contribution of peatlands to climate protection“, Prof Dr Matthias Drösler and research assistant Pia Röder talk about the importance of intact peatlands for climate and biodiversity protection as well as the challenges and opportunities of rewetting and peatland-compatible agriculture.
The starting point of the discussion is the fact that peatlands store enormous amounts of carbon in their peat soils, but release it as greenhouse gases when drained, thus exacerbating the climate crisis. The two explain why it is urgently necessary to rewet drained peatland sites, what role paludicultures can play in this and how the PSC's research at Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT) is helping to develop practical forms of management for wet peatland soils.
The episode clearly shows how important knowledge transfer is in order to bring the topic of peatland and climate protection to the general public - a central concern of the PSC and its partners.
