New president of the LWG has his horticultural roots at the HSWT
At the beginning of October, Minister of Agriculture Michaela Kaniber appointed Dr Jörg Hirsche as the new president of the Bavarian Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture (LWG).
Dr Jörg Hirsche takes over from Andreas Maier, who is retiring. Professors Johannes Nebelmeir, Dominikus Kittemann and Sebastian Peisl from the Horticulture and Food Technology department at Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT) congratulated the new president in person, emphasising his links to HSWT. The new LWG director's career in horticulture began with his training in ornamental plant cultivation at a predecessor institution of the current Institute of Horticulture. In addition to acquiring practical horticultural knowledge, he also had the opportunity to familiarise himself with research work in horticulture by supervising experiments at the Institute.
After graduating as a gardener specialising in ornamental plant cultivation, Dr Jörg Hirsche studied horticultural sciences at the neighbouring TU Munich-Weihenstephan, now the TUM School of Life Sciences. He completed his doctorate at the University of Würzburg and began his professional career at the State Technical College for Agriculture in Landshut-Schönbrunn. During his subsequent work as a lecturer at the Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Tourism (StMELF), Hirsche maintained contact with the HSWT and visited the HSWT Weihenstephan campus in various capacities.
Close cooperation between HSWT and LWG will continue
The representatives of the HSWT thanked the outgoing president Andreas Maier for the consistently good cooperation and emphasised that they look forward to a good continuation with the new president Dr Jörg Hirsche. There are plenty of interfaces, especially with the Institute of Horticulture: Prof Dr Sebastian Peisl already held the office of President of the LWG years ago, Prof Dr Dominikus Kittemann and Prof Dr Johannes Nebelmeir represent the HSWT on the LWG's Research and Innovation Advisory Board, the former for the specialist area of fruit growing and tree nurseries, the latter for ornamental plant cultivation.
His professional career (practice - science - technical college - ministry) predestines Dr Hirsche in his new role for a good combination of practical horticultural topics with horticultural research and horticultural knowledge transfer as well as the strategic implementation of the resulting findings.
