HSWT is granted the right to award doctorates in ‘Sustainable Land Use Systems’

The Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act of January 2023 grants Bavarian universities of applied sciences the right to award doctorates independently. HSWT has successfully established the “Sustainable Land Use Systems (SusLand)” Doctoral Centre and has been granted the right to award doctorates for seven years. This enables early-career researchers to do a doctorate directly at HSWT.

SusLand conducts research into sustainable land use in the life sciences, with a focus on biodiversity, climate change and the bioeconomy. Sixteen experienced HSWT professors who meet the criteria of the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act are founding members. They are working on innovative solutions that contribute to the UN’s SDGs and respect planetary boundaries. Ecological, economic and social aspects are taken into account to meet the needs of present and future generations.

A strong signal for solutions to climate change and societal transformation

Prof. Dr Jörg Ewald will take on the role of Head of the Doctoral Centre. He has already made a name for himself as spokesperson for the Joint Academic Partnership in supporting researchers and doctoral candidates, and is now expanding these activities through the Doctoral Centre.

Sustainable Land Use Systems (SusLand) Doctoral Centre

The SusLand Doctoral Centre will be based within the HSWT’s Graduate Academy. Prof. Dr Christoph Moning, Vice-President for Research and Knowledge Transfer, heads the Academy. Dr Michaela Stegmann will take on the role of Executive Director. The HSWT offers comprehensive support for early-career researchers right through to their doctorate and beyond.
