HSWT is the only HAW in the Bavarian Network for Climate Research 2
Following the first bayklif funding programme (2018-2023), the HSWT will be funded in the second Bavarian climate research network bayklif2 from 2026.
The Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts (StMWK) is launching the second Bavarian Climate Research Network (bayklif2) in January 2026. The areas of health, water, nutrition and biodiversity are the focus of the new funding phase, as the consequences of climate change are increasingly being felt in these areas. The aim of the programme is to promote interdisciplinary research that develops innovative solutions to the challenges of climate change.
Only one University of Applied Sciences funded
With its research project „SmartReForest“, led by Prof Dr Florian Haselbeck (HSWT), Prof Dr Christian Zang (HSWT) and Dr Konstantin Gregor (TUM), the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT) is the only university of applied sciences to receive funding as part of bayklif2. In addition to the HSWT, the University of Regensburg, the Technical University of Munich and the University of Augsburg are also being funded.
In the first bayklif funding programme, which ended successfully in December 2023, HSWT professorships worked on three projects: BAYSICS (sub-project 6), LandKlif (joint project) and HyBBEx (junior project).
Safeguarding essential forest ecosystems
Climate change impacts threaten the integrity of forests through extreme weather conditions and the increased occurrence of pests and lead to large-scale tree dieback. Suitable reforestation strategies are needed to restore damaged forest ecosystems in such a way that essential ecosystem services such as water supply, timber production and the promotion of biodiversity are maintained. The aim of „SmartReForest“ is to develop a practical concept for climate-resilient and optimised reforestation. In three sub-projects, modern technologies such as vegetation modelling are combined with artificial intelligence and ecophysiological and forestry expertise. SmartReForest" thus fits in with bayklif2's clear focus on scientific innovation and technological excellence.
