Professional exchange on the production of poinsettias

The event was organised in cooperation with the Bavarian Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture (LWG). After a successful premiere of the event in Veitshöchheim last year, around 40 participants from the Bavarian ornamental plant cultivation sector gathered in Freising this year to find out about current developments and trial results relating to poinsettias.

Resource-saving cultivation methods

The presentation of trial results from both institutions focussed on resource-saving production methods. Turning away from peat as a substrate component or adapting climate control to reduce heating energy requirements are current challenges for growers. Sarah Waldinger, HSWT, reported on the experiences and test results from the Finito project, which is focussing intensively on the use of peat-free and peat-reduced substrates. Sebastian Born, HSWT, and Christine Hartmann, LWG, took on dynamic control strategies and new and proven varieties in the test.
The numerous requests to speak emphasised the high relevance of the topics for commercial horticulture. However, the contributions from those present also showed that sustainable cultivation methods are already being used in practice in many cases. The narrative of the „climate killer poinsettia“ is no longer justified.

The range of topics was rounded off by information from the field of plant protection (Wolfgang Ahlvers, Erzeugerring) and a presentation on current developments in poinsettia breeding (Prof. Dr Johannes Nebelmeir, HSWT).

The breaks were used for a lively exchange and the view into the greenhouses provided an even better impression of the trial results.
