Dies Academicus 2026: A look back, a look ahead and a range of emotions

55 Years of HSWT

Around 200 members of the university community, partners, friends and distinguished political guests accepted HSWT’s invitation to attend the annual academic celebration in Freising. “Today we are celebrating the 55th anniversary of HSWT in style – today we are celebrating ourselves,” said HSWT president Dr Eric Veulliet as he welcomed all the guests to the packed lecture theatre in the D1 building. The Dies Academicus is a day for looking back, looking ahead and for self-reflection, the president continued. At the get-together beforehand, guests had already had the opportunity to trace the history of HSWT through a photo exhibition spanning the past 55 years.

Special award for long-standing outstanding achievements

In keeping with tradition, the Dies Academicus once again recognised outstanding achievements in study and teaching, as well as in research and sustainability. In addition, Josef Gangkofer, Corporate Identity Officer, was honoured for his many years of exceptional service to the HSWT. In his tribute, President Dr Eric Veulliet emphasised that Gangkofer was not only a true ‘home-grown’ member of the University of applied sciences, but had also played a key role in shaping the visibility and public image of HSWT through his work.

Embracing and shaping the future

In his lecture, futurologist Oliver Leisse addressed upcoming developments and the transformation of the world of work and working methods brought about by the impact of artificial intelligence on the new world. He clearly demonstrated how one can actively and impartially harness these changes, thereby expanding the scope of one’s own capabilities. At the same time, he emphasised that, despite all the progress brought about by AI, interpersonal aspects and team cohesion remain irreplaceable and constitute a key factor in the world of work.

AlumniTalk: One degree programme, two generations

To mark their almost milestone birthday, the AlumniTalk featuring Hans and Hanna Breitsameter from the Breitsameter organic farm offered insights into student life and studies both then and now. Both father Hans and daughter Hanna completed their studies in Agriculture at the Weihenstephan Campus of the HSWT and, in a discussion moderated by Prof. Dr Tanja Barton, highlighted both differences and parallels.

Honorary Senator title for Cornelia Horsch

As part of the Dies Academicus celebrations, Dr Eric Veulliet conferred the title of Honorary Senator upon Cornelia Horsch. Cornelia Horsch, a member of the management board at Horsch Maschinen GmbH, is a long-standing member of the University Council and the first Honorary Senator at HSWT. 

A joint celebration

At the reception that followed in the courtyard of the D1 building, featuring a buffet and music by the AK Blasmusik Weihenstephan brass band, all guests had the opportunity to chat and get to know one another.
