„Weihenstephaner Bilder“ – Testimonies to Benedictine Culture – Weihenstephan Monastery Summer

“Images of Weihenstephan – Testimonies to Benedictine Culture from Weihenstephan” is the title of Peter B. Steiner’s lecture.

Twenty works of art, created over 800 years for or at Weihenstephan, serve as a reminder of the culture of the Benedictine abbey. Those who withdrew from the great cities of antiquity – hermits, known in Greek as ‘monachoi’ – laid the foundations of monasticism in both the East and the West. Benedict of Nursia (480–547) provided them with a rule for communal living. In doing so, he transformed society, for he abolished the distinction between people who worked for a living – whom the Greeks called ‘banausoi’ – and those who, living off the labour of others, were able to devote themselves to scholarship and politics. To this day? On display are examples of illuminated manuscripts, altarpieces and sculptures.
The art historian Peter B. Steiner is a writer and honorary professor at the Technical University of Munich; he was formerly director of the Diocesan Museum in Freising and a lecturer at three universities.
