AI and discrimination
Artificial intelligence and other data-based systems present themselves as helpful tools in everyday life and work and harbour transformative or even disruptive potential for our societies. Their widespread use is often associated with the idea that AI systems are superior to humans in many respects; it is precisely their supposed neutrality that makes them appear fair and just. However, AI systems are by no means free from social prejudices and power relations.
In the lunchtime lecture, we want to look together at the extent to which AI systems represent distorted images of our society, intentionally and unintentionally discriminate and what hidden costs these systems entail.
