January 2022 saw the launch of the 'African-Bavarian Alliance for Applied Life Sciences' project at Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT).
The African-Bavarian Alliance is sponsored by the Bavarian State Chancellery as part of the 'Bavarian Africa Package' and is a key part of the Africa Network and the university’s internationalisation strategy.
The project will establish a network between HSWT and partner institutions from Ethiopia, Senegal, Tunisia and South Africa (Western Cape and Gauteng), the focal countries of Bavaria’s cooperative work with Africa.
The 'African-Bavarian Alliance for Applied Life Sciences' aims to be an active exchange platform for practical training in the life sciences and to raise awareness of the advantages and increase acceptance of applied teaching among all project partners. Within the 'African-Bavarian Alliance for Applied Life Sciences', alongside the dialogue between the partner regions, the exchange between institutions in the individual countries also plays an important part.
The project focuses on the exchange of ideas about applied teaching in different subject areas of the life sciences (e.g. agriculture, horticulture, food technology, agribusiness, land use planning and biotechnology), emphasising the importance of agricultural value chains. All of the listed subject areas will discuss the integration of climate-related issues in applied teaching. The cross-sectional issue 'Climate change and climate change adaptation' is thus a key focal element of the alliance.
A large number of virtual event formats are planned as part of the 'African-Bavarian Alliance for Applied Life Sciences', as well as three 10-day in-person seminars held in Germany. These events will be accompanied by trips by HSWT members to the partner countries for training and establishing relationships.
The project will build on the success of the now completed 'Bavarian-Ethiopian Alliance for Applied Life Sciences' which was implemented by HSWT from 2019-2021. The 'Bavarian-Ethiopian Alliance for Applied Life Sciences' established a network with Ethiopian partners in higher education, industry and the public sector and held numerous events to discuss the implementation of applied teaching.
