The Language Centre at the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences offers students at both of the University’s campuses in Weihenstephan and Triesdorf the opportunity to acquire a UNIcert® Foreign Language Certificate. This is an inter-university and supra-regional additional qualification that guarantees a comparable level of training. UNIcert® is currently offered at some 60 universities.
The UNIcert® formation programme offers foreign language training that is specific to universities and geared towards studying, practical training and the workplace. It allows students to become acquainted with the culture of the target language country and provides students with both foreign-language and intercultural skills. The programme enables students to successfully undertake work placements and studies abroad and boosts mobility and competitiveness among graduates on the national and international labour market.
The basic introductory level comprises four successive courses:
Learning objective: To acquire basic, everyday language and intercultural communication skills. UNIcert® Basic corresponds to level "A2 – Elementary" of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the European Council.
After successfully completing all mandatory courses, participants shall receive a UNIcert® Certificate for the UNIcert® basic introductory level.
Level I comprises two successive courses:
Learning objective: To acquire basic, everyday language and intercultural communication skills; to acquire the linguistic skills to cope with simple, everyday situations at university and the workplace. UNIcert® I corresponds to level "B1-Intermediate" of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the European Council.
After successfully completing all mandatory courses, participants shall receive a UNIcert® Certificate for Level I.
Level II comprises four two-hour classes:
Learning objective: To develop and consolidate general language and intercultural skills; to become familiar with current topics and situations relating to culture, degree programmes and university. To acquire the linguistic skills to cope with technical, vocational and culturally specific situations. UNIcert® II corresponds to level “B2-Upper intermediate” of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the European Council.
After successfully completing all mandatory courses, participants shall receive a UNIcert® Certificate for Level II.
Students shall be admitted to UNIcert® Level III classes after completing UNIcert® Level II or after obtaining a corresponding result in a placement test at the beginning of the semester (see the Language Centre homepage). Regular attendance (at least 75%) at all UNIcert® classes is required and is a prerequisite for taking the exams.
After successfully completing all mandatory courses and the final written and oral exams, participants shall receive a UNIcert® Certificate for Level III.
UNIcert® courses can be attended as general academic elective modules or compulsory elective modules. Registration for the course (and therefore automatically for the exam) only takes place on student.online. Master’s students must register with the Language Centre by email.
Please note: A corresponding result in the placement test at the start of the semester is required to participate in the classes.
Some degree programmes only recognise the UNIcert® Level II English courses as elective modules. The type of recognition can be seen in the curricula of individual degree programmes.
The study and examination regulations (SPO) for UNIcert® of 10 September 2015 entered into force on 1 October 2015. These are applicable to all students taking an exam to acquire UNIcert® foreign language certificates from winter semester 2015/2016.
The curriculum provides additional information on technical language courses and all courses offered by the Language Centre. Curricula are organised into the Weihenstephan and Triesdorf campuses:
Weihenstephan study plan, Triesdorf study plan.
Students who repeat UNIcert® courses and have already met the minimum attendance requirement of 75% do NOT have to attend the courses again in the repeat semester in order to be eligible to sit the exam.
Please click here to find out more about UNIcert®.
It is possible to take the IELTS exam directly at the British Council.
IELTS is recognised by many universities and employers in English-speaking countries. The fee is around EUR 200. The exam is valid for 2 years.
The German Language University Entrance Examination (DSH) and the Test of German as a Foreign Language (TestDaF) cannot be taken at the Language Centre at the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences.
